ValPak Girl

Yesterday evening was another online date. We decided to meet at a local bakery/cafe for a quick cup of coffee at around 7:30 since she claimed she needed to get to bed early and I wanted be home in time for "24." It was one of those places where you order, pay at the counter and then grab a seat. As we're waiting in line to pay, she tells me she'd prefer if we paid separately. I tell her it's no big deal and that I'd be more than happy to pay for her coffee and cheese danish. She insists on paying for herself, and I don't argue. When we get to the register, she reaches into her purse and busts out one of those ValPaks filled with an assortment of coupons. She begins to casually search for a 10% off coupon that she can't find. The line grows a little longer and the other customers become impatient. In an effort to calm the now angry crowd and move things along, I tell the cashier that I'm paying for both of us. As I hand the cashier the money, Valpak girl finds the coupon, but doesn't give it to the cashier. Instead she says, "I'll put this somewhere so I can find it easier next time." A tad on the selfish side, but I'm in a good mood so I decide not to let it ruin the whole date.

We sit down, her with her free coffee and danish, and me with my hot chocolate and black and white cookie that I paid 10% more for than I should have. The conversation is interesting and this girl is actually quite pretty. I start to think that maybe I could spend my Sunday mornings with this person clipping coupons out of the Daily News. Just then, I get up to get a napkin. When I come back, the change that the cashier put on my tray is gone. In the few seconds I was away from the table, Valpak girl stole thirty cents from me.

A cheapskate AND a thief. Don't let this one get away.

So is using coupons on dates now acceptable? I've got one for a 6 piece at KFC I need to use by next week.

I'm shocked you even concidered her after the valpak incident. Wow... you deserve a medal. That's almost creepy. If she was a guy that would have been the stuff from a "dates from hell" category.
Incidentally, you should Tivo 24 and watch Heroes too... It's kicking 24's butt this season. (IMO :-) Too bad they are against each other. Bad planning...

TG, she was very cute, and I'm a guy. What else needs to be said? I don't deserve a medal. A good swift kick in the head to knock some sense into me maybe!...But you're absolutely right, if I busted out the Valpak, the date would've probably been over right then and there.

You're right about Heroes too. It's blowing away 24, but I don't have tivo or dvr so I watch 24 on tv and Heroes online.

Hi Marc, found the link to your blog on the blog Jdatersanonymous.com and it's refreshing to read a dating blog from the guy's point of view! I'm a 35-year-old single, Jewish female who spent years trying to find "The One" through fruitless online dating and several failed long-term relationships. Finally found "The One" on JDate (the feeling is mutual) and we've been together for over 7 months now. Keep dating, you just never know!

BTW, I love to use coupons, but I would NEVER pull one out on a first date, that is way beyond tacky! And she stole 30 cents from you, very pathetic!

Hey Rebecca, welcome to the blog. It's great that you found the one, and on Jdate no less. I've actually had the least success with that site...I always thought those "success stories" they show on the site were made up, but you're living, breathing proof it can work. I guess that's why I'll continue to plunk down the $39 a month for it until I can't afford it anymore. Hey, maybe I should call Valpak girl and ask her if she has a jdate coupon for me....Ahh, even if she does, she wouldn't share it.

My brother and a male cousin of mine both met their wives on JDate, so there is some hope for the rest of us!

Wow, glad to hear happy Jdate stories in the comments. I was on Jdate for so long I can't even remember. I've made some great girlfriends. Made connections with lots of folks, but never found romance. Oddly though, I did meet my fiance online, but that was through our blog. So...if the JDates don't work...at least you got the blog already rolling :)

I'll have to keep reading so I can keep an eye out for you :)

If you find yourself in a situation where the person you're meeting is interested in paying for herself what you can always do is instead of simply saying that you'll pay, say that you'll get this check, and she can pickup the check next time.

If she wants to make a stink because she thinks that she owes you $5 then she has issues.

A normal person understands that refusing a $5 item is no different than refusing a compliment, It's a gesture you say thank you for, perhaps even think to yourself that's kinda nice because it wasn't necessary, and move on.
