The Russians Are Coming

Got an IM last night from a woman in Brooklyn who doesn't waste time or words.

"Are you Russian?," she wrote.

That was her opening line. Not "Hi," or "Can I ask you a question?" Just, "Are you Russian?"

"No," I responded.

"Never Mind," was her reply, and the conversation was over. No "Thanks," or "Sorry to bother you." Not even a "Dasvidania."

There's nothing in my profile that implies that I'm Russian, nor do I look Russian. I've been to Brighton Beach a couple of times, and I'll stop and watch Maria Sharapova if I catch her playing on TV, but that's as close as I get to being Russian. So the only thing I can infer from this brief exchange is that this chick randomly IMs guys hoping she'll get lucky and find her Russian prince, or no one told her the Cold War is over, and she's looking for commies.

Her rudeness aside, you have to admire someone who gets straight to the point like that. She knows what she wants, and if you don't have it, she has no use for you. No wasting time on small talk and polite pleasantries like us crazy Americans.

So good luck to you Natasha. I hope you find your Boris soon.

Yeah, man. Some of these Russians women are hardcore. They only want Russian guys, and if you're not Russian, they want nothing to do with you.

I dated a Russian girl once. She didn't mind at all that I wasn't Russian, but her parents were very old school and hated the fact that I wasn't one of them. Her father could barely stand to look at me.

I guess in some ways the cold war isn't over...culturally, at least.

"Are you Russian?"

"Nyet!"

"Are you Russian?"

"Does Russian ancestry count?"

"Are you Russian?"

"No, but I am willing to be Russian by infusion!"

LOL

Del, I have no Russian ancestry, and I generally prefer to be the infuser, rather than the infusee. So I guess "Nyet" would have been the best answer for me. Next time.
