The Texting Party

This weekend I attended a texting party. What's a texting party, you ask? - It's a gathering of people at a local bar or lounge where instead of people talking to each other, they're texting people who are not there. The party wasn't officially labeled a "texting party," rather guests were invited under the guise that they'd be attending one of those birthday parties women are so fond of throwing themselves. I sat there, one of the few who wasn't texting, looking around wondering why any of these iPhone and Blackberry brandishing people even bothered showing up. And more importantly, I wondered why this behavior is now socially acceptable? Clearly, these people would rather be talking to people that weren't there.

I'd have rather been home watching TV. Would it have been okay if I put a portable TV on the table, took my pants off, and started flipping through the channels? How about if I stopped on Skin-emax? Could I have asked the waitress for a box of Kleenex, and REALLY made myself at home? It would have been just as inappropriate as what the texters were doing. To me, nothing says "I don't wanna be here" more than someone incessantly texting at 11:30 on a Saturday night. And when I say "incessant," I mean they were clicking away on those micro keyboards like a bunch of Lois Lanes struggling to get that hot story in before the paper went to press at midnight.

The irony of it all is that had the texters actually been in the same room as the people they were texting, they'd be texting other people entirely.

I cannot stand that nonsense. It probably stems, at some level, from insecurity and desire to look cool and popular rather than risk rejection by actually striking up a conversation.

I have to text because the people I text to, the people that I would love to meet or even date live 1000s of miles away from me... and those people are texting in the same room??!!! That is freaking insane!!! This is crap!

The funny part is, no has actually HAS TO text or constantly be on a cell phone! What about living in the moment and giving your full attention to those you're with?

If I happened to be sitting in this bar witnessing this "text" party and Marc whacking off at the bar, amazingly, I'd talk to Marc first!

Next time, go swing dancing. People can't swing dance and text at the same time. Plus, you get to hold a girl right there and listen to decent music.

That's pretty silly. If you're in a bar with other people, ditch the phones and start socializing. That's what bars are for.

Wow, i've never heard of that and I like to consider myself 'hip'ish or at the least in tune. Not that I would attend one either way! Though perhaps for a point and laugh session?!

With this kind of activity, guess I cannot stand with it because I prefer to talk than to sit around and text other people.

Texting is so annoying. It takes like fifteen minutes to type what I could say over the phone in two minutes!
